History

HMS Excellent was founded in 1830 as the Royal Navy’s gunnery school. It was originally based onboard a ship of that name and moored towards Fareham creek. In the mid 1850’s Whale (Originally “Whaley”) Island was purchased by the Navy and in the mid 1880’s it was agreed to move the gunnery ashore and the first buildings constructed. Turrets were constructed on the island and ships of the line moored close by, used to give seagoing experience of drills and live firings.  Gunnery of all descriptions was taught here from small arms through to the guided missile age. Although for those passing through the portals of whatever rank the sight of a Gunnery Instructor bearing down was always considered to be more dangerous than any ordinance being handled.

The gunnery school was actually decommissioned in the mid 1980’s but reactivated as a naval establishment in 1994 as part of the rationalisation of Naval bases in the early 1990’s. It now houses the Navy’s Damage and Firefighting school, its Dive training unit and is home to HMS Bristol which is where the new Navy’s new recruits get their first experience of life aboard ship. It continues to be the home of small arms training on its Tipner range.
